Vocal Masterclass with Michael Chioldi

Baritone Michael Chioldi has performed at nearly every major American opera house including: The Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, New York City Opera, Washington National Opera and Los Angeles Opera. Internationally he has traveled extensively in Japan with Maestro Seiji Osawa, and has appeared in Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Macau and Spain. Engagements in 2013 include La Traviata with Palm Beach Opera, Tosca with Hawaii Opera Theater, Falstaff with Chautauqua Opera, Giovanna D’Arco with Chicago Opera Theater, Salome with Utah Opera, and Don Carlo with Austin Lyric Opera. Early in 2014 Michael will appear as Macbeth with Palm Beach Opera, in La Bohème at Royal Albert Hall London, and with Lyric Opera Baltimore in the title role in Nabucco.
Westminster Opera Students will be singing in this masterclass. The public is welcome to observe at no charge.

Maestro Gerald Steichen has established himself as one of America’s most versatile conductors. He currently holds the positions of Principal Pops Conductor of the Utah Symphony and Music Director of the Ridgefield Symphony (Connecticut). He also completed sixteen seasons as Principal Pops Conductor of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. Maestro Steichen spent ten seasons conducting at New York City Opera, and he has conducted operas for Utah Opera, and Glimmerglass Opera, among others.
Westminster vocal students will perform scenes from Adam Guettel’s The Light in the Piazza.

Vocal Masterclass with Erie Mills

Utah Opera Production Studios
Devoted to training young classical singers and emerging artists, Erie Mills teaches privately in the East Bay area of San Francisco. She also gives Master Classes throughout the country and works with major opera companies (at Opera Theatre of St. Louis since 2004 , at the Metropolitan Opera from 2008 to the present and at Santa Fe Opera from 2009 to the present) as an English diction coach/specialist. A past Professor of Music at San José State University where she taught for ten years, she serves on the boards of various music organizations, including the Board of Directors of Opera America. For over twenty-five years, Erie Mills performed to critical and popular acclaim throughout the world, dazzling audiences with her sparkling coloratura voice, captivating personality and vivid portrayal of roles.
Utah Opera Resident Artists will sing in the masterclass. The class is free and open to the public for observation. No registration is required.
Piano Masterclass with Pianist Ronald Brautigam

Abravanel Hall Stage
Dutch pianist Ronald Brautigam will perform Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with Thierry Fischer and the Utah Symphony on November 15 and 16. While in Salt Lake, he has graciously agreed to teach a masterclass. Mr. Brautigam is renowned for his performances on both the modern piano and fortepiano. He was a student of Rudolf Serkin.
This class is sponsored by the Utah Symphony Youth Guild and will feature advanced Youth Guild members playing for Mr. Brautigam. The class is free and open to the public but because seating on stage is limited, we ask that you register if you plan to attend.
