Fitzcarraldo, a dramatic feature directed by Werner Herzog, traces the story of a man obsessed with building an opera house on the Amazon River. The opening scene was filmed in the Manaus Opera House, a building which also serves as one of Florencia’s goals in the opera that bears her name.
Burden of Dreams is a documentary about Werner Herzog, the director who was obsessed with creating a film about a man obsessed. Witness how he literally had a swath of rainforest cleared in order to transfer a large boat from one arm of the Amazon to another.

The Shaman’s Apprentice

The Shaman’s Apprentice is the story of ethnobotanist Dr. Mark Plotkin’s quest to preserve the healing knowledge and practices of shamans in the rainforest.
Following the film, University of Utah biologists Lissy Coley and Tom Kursar will discuss the project depicted in the film and present their own research on plants’ chemical defenses.
