Across the Arts
This year's professional development Across the Arts topic is American Arts; collaborative events on the topis will take place in spring and summer of 2012. Events will include Utah Opera's Of Mice and Men in May 2012, Utah Symphony's May 25-26 concerts that include the Ives/Schuman 'Variations on America,' the Utah Mseum of Fine Arts' "At Work" exhibit, and the Utah Shakespeare Festival's To Kill a Mockingbird, which runs through the summer. Teachers can earn re-licensure points by attending performances, lectures, and art exhibits. A listing of events will be available here in early spring 2012.
Music! Words! Opera!
Utah Opera offers a week-long teacher development course to train interested teachers in a process of creating and producing original operas with their own students. During the following year(s), Utah Opera provides some financial support as well as a composer to aid in the music composition process. Teachers can earn 3 hours of university credit for taking this course, as long as they commit to a follow-through project with students in the following school year. The next MWO Workshop will be in late June 2012. Please call Paula Fowler at 801-869-9090 or click here to register.
Listening 101: Best Listening Practices
Using the repertoire to be performed on the upcoming school concert, we will review the elements of music and practice listening for them. We will talk about the ways in which they are used by different composers and discover how this attentive listening can enrich our enjoyment and appreciation of music. This workshop is targeted to elementary classroom teachers who are expected to teach core music curriculum, but who have little or no training in teaching music. To get more information call Beverly Hawkins at 801-869-9092.
